At Gordon Children’s Academy, we strive to inspire our children to have a curiosity and fascination about the world that we live in. We want our children to use creativity and imagination, to design and create products that encourage the children to solve real life and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Our ambitious Design Technology curriculum is designed for the children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding. This enables our children to understand their rights and responsibilities towards making their own decisions in their learning. The curriculums aim is to create strong links with other subjects, such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. Children will be equipped with knowledge about diverse places, people and resources which is underpinned by appropriate vocabulary enabling children to effectively communicate throughout. We want Design and Technology to prepare our children, to provide them the opportunities, responsibilities, experiences they need to be successful in later life and to be their best self.
We aim to develop children’s natural enquiry and curiosity for the world around them whilst making links to the past, fostering enquiry and helping children to build on existing knowledge and to grow as Design Technicians. Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities the pupils develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Through the curriculum, children will be exposed to a range of opportunities from engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a meaningful purpose. Children will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
All teaching of DT should follow the current Design Technology curriculum. Each stage should be rooted in technical knowledge. The design process should be linked in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning. While making, children should be given choice and a range of tools to choose freely from. To evaluate, children should be able to evaluate their own protects to promote reflection skills.
In line with the national curriculum for design and technology we aim to ensure that all pupils:
This is implemented through:
• A well thought out, whole school, yearly overview of the DT curriculum which allows for progression across year groups in all areas of DT (textiles, mechanisms, structures, food and electrical systems)
• Well planned and resourced projects providing children with a hands-on and enriching experience
• A range of skills being taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken
• Each DT project from Year 1 to Year 6 addressing the principles of designing, making, and evaluating and incorporating relevant technical knowledge and understanding in relevant contexts.
